Food consumption after a painstaking workout is inevitable. Sometimes it happens that your hunger games go a notch higher and you end up eating cheese-ridden pizzas or butter sandwiches. However, it defeats the purpose of your workout. While it’s important to re-energize yourself, at the same time you need to be tactful about what you are eating. Here’s the list of 7 foods you should avoid after workout, so that you don’t end up gaining the calories that you just lost –
1. Spicy Foods –
It can be a bit tempting to eat something spicy like bhel while your journey back home from the gym. However, let me tell you that those spicy chutneys mixed with bhel are difficult to digest if you eat just after workout. Moreover, these spices are detrimental to the rebuilding process of muscles. You need to have something that is rich in protein and little sugar which will bring back your sugar level.
2. Cold Drinks –
Ah, a can of Coca-Cola can be something that will satiate your thirst after workout. However, it is important to know that cold drink or soda doesn’t hydrate you – something that you need immediately after workout. On the top of that, cold drinks can be a hindrance to your weight-loss journey if you are on one. You certainly don’t want to add that many calories just for the thirst that water can satisfy.
3. Fatty Foods –
You need to avoid fatty foods after workout for obvious reasons. The fried fatty foods as they slow down the digestion process and will delay the supply of much-needed nutrients into muscles. Moreover, they are high on calories which will hamper the effect of workout by adding those calories back again.
4. Chocolates –
Who doesn’t mind peeking into the fridge and grabbing a bite from Bourneville or Nutella after workout. Well, all of us deserve that there should be perks of this hard work. However, if you are trying to reduce weight, then you should chocolates at the cost of your temptation. If you still want some chocolates, then 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and cacao powder will serve the purpose.
5. High Fiber Foods –
You can surely have two bananas before banana but having a high fiber food may cause cramping and bloating. Avoid salads with flax seeds or kale after workout. You should also avoid raw veggies because you need some calories and raw vegetables will not be able to supply that.
6. Simple Carbs –
Eating simple sandwich bread or a pastry may look quite innocuous. However, you need to know that these fats slow down digestion. It will do opposite to why you are working out. Simple carbs slow down your metabolism and it takes days to digest a piece of white bread. So, it is one of the foods that you should avoid after workout.
7. Heavy Protein Foods –
Akin to spicy foods, heavy protein foods can be hard to digest. So, steak or chicken just after workout is not good. However, if you are working out to bulk up your body then you can have. You can also replace it with protein shake that will help in retaining the muscles.
There are other foods including fast foods, energy bars, sports drink and black beans that you should avoid after workout. We do exercise to keep ourselves in good health and shape. Eating something that contributes nothing to the purpose or for that matter also seems to hamper the effect doesn’t make any sense.
