Kerala is known as God’s own country. It is full of natural beauty and a place that comes off as serene and peaceful. It has majestic hill-tops, beaches, and magnificent landscapes. Many people visit Kerala for the peace and tranquility it offers. If you have planned a Kerala trip and are looking to select places you should visit, then here’s the concise list of 5 places that you should definitely visit in Kerala –
1. Kumarakom –
If you are someone who loves backwaters, nature, and houseboats, then Kumarakom is an absolute delight. The major attraction in Kumarakom is Vembanad Lake. It is located near Kottayam. If you are a bird watcher, then Kumarakom is a paradise for you. The place is also famous for Ayurvedic Massage that will relax your body and mind; and there is, of course, Vembanad Lake, which one of the best places to visit in Kerala and the longest lake in India. Sunrise and sunsets add to the experience. The place is 2 hours journey from Cochin International Airport or you can take a regular bus to the destination.
2. Munnar –
It is a hill station which is famous for landscapes, tea estates, flora, and fauna. The most favorite places in Munnar are Eravikulam National Park, Tea Estates, and Anamudi. Three rivers namely Kundalay, Mudrapuzha, and Nallathanni meet at Munnar. Munnar is full of lush green landscapes, waterfalls, lakes, and forests. It is the tea plantations that will take the cake because they have the ability to absorb you in their beauty. You can reach them by train or from Cochin International Airport which is 3 hours distant from Munnar. You can also take NH45 or NH85 to reach Munnar.
3. Kovalam –
Kovalam has rivers and beaches, which are some of the best beaches in India. The largest beach of all is Lighthouse beach followed by Hawah beach and Samudra. You can have a foot at the German Bakery. Apart from that, you can head on to Vellayani Lake, Halcyon Castle, and Valiyathura Pir. It is 15 km away from Trivandrum Airport from where you can take a cab. You can also take Kovalam Rd if you are traveling by your own vehicle or there is always a bus by Kerala Road Transport Corporation.

If you are a beach person then Varkala is the destination for you, which has also got some cliffs and beauteous landscapes. The beach at Varkala is very clean and peaceful and less crowded0. It’s the best place if you want to have some me-time, as you can spend hours over there musing. You can also go swimming in the waters, be cautious that you take the plunge before tides. The blend of mountains and beach just does the magic. It’s just 1-hour journey to Trivandrum International Airport. You can also take a train or Kerala State Transport. If you have your own vehicle or car, then take the highway NH 66.
5. Thekkady –
I am assuming you might have heard about the famous elephant rides in Kerala. The best ones you will find in Thekkady, which is also famous for backwaters and wildlife. You can also witness tigers, deer, bison and some other species. The best part about Thekkady is plantation and hill stations that are visual treats to a visitor’s eyes. Do not miss the Periyar River, Murikkady, and Chellarkovil. It is approximately 3 km away from Goa International Airport. If you have a private vehicle or going by bus then NH 85, NH 66 or NH 183 will take you to Thekkady.
It is difficult to pick only 5 places to visit in Kerala, but considering that not many of you would have the liberty to stay for a long time, I have limited the list to the count of 5. However, if you have ample time to spend in Kerala, then I highly recommend Wayanad, Alleppey, and Thrissur to include in your itinerary.
